In summary, mindset plays a crucial role in shaping our actions, reactions, and problem-solving skills. It is formed by our thoughts, experiences, and values and can be changed through mindfulness and self-awareness. Different types of mindsets include growth vs. fixed mindset, optimistic vs. pessimistic, and risk-taker vs. risk averse. Adopting a growth mindset can help us learn better and approach tasks with more perseverance in the face of failures and setbacks. Mindfulness is a useful tool for gaining awareness of our thoughts and controlling them to create a positive mindset.

“Changing One Bad Habit Has Domino Effect.” News Center, 5 June 2012, https://news.feinberg.northwestern.edu/2012/06/05/domino_effect/.

A new study from Northwestern Medicine suggests that changing one bad habit can have a domino effect on others. By reducing sedentary leisure time, people tend to consume less junk food and saturated fats because they are no longer glued to the TV and snacking. The study found that the most effective way to rehab a delinquent lifestyle requires cutting time spent in front of a TV or computer screen and eating more fruits and vegetables. The researchers assigned 204 adult patients with unhealthy habits into one of four treatments and found that people are capable of making big lifestyle changes in a short period of time and maintaining them.

James Clear. “The Science of Developing Mental Toughness in Your Health, Work, and Life.” James Clear, 4 Feb. 2020, https://jamesclear.com/mental-toughness.

To summarize, Mental toughness, otherwise known as grit, refers to a person's perseverance and passion to achieve long-term goals. It plays a crucial role in achieving goals in all areas of life, such as health, education, and work. Studies have shown that mental toughness is more important than talent or intelligence in determining success. For example, at the United States Military Academy, West Point, it was found that cadets who had more grit were 60% more likely to finish a brutal summer initiation program known as "Beast Barracks." Mentally tough individuals are more consistent, committed, and better equipped to handle stress and challenges. While talent and intelligence play a role in success, mental toughness is a self-sought role that only individuals can achieve in their minds.
